Wednesdays 12-14 c.t., in N 020, Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1

Class starts Monday, April 17th.

Tutorials

When: to be determined in the first week of class.

The problem sheets will be published via moodle.

Welcome to Quantum Optics II

Quantum Optics II will discusses a variety of topics from the field of Quantum Optics. It is not a simple "continuation" of the Quantum Optics I class from the winter semester but reviews and builds on some of the concepts of that course. The main prerequisites are quantum mechanics and some knowledge of atomic physics.

Within the lecture there will be a weekly Journal Club to discuss scientific literature related to the topics discussed. In addition, problem sets will be handed out and discussed.

Some of the topics that will be discussed are:

Overview
Two-Level Atom Revisited
Two-Level Atom Extended (Adiabatic Theorem, Landau Zener Transitions, Geometric Phases)
Propagation of Light in Dilute Media
Multi-Level Systems (Raman Transitions, Electromagnetic Induced Transparency, Slow Light)
Open Quantum Systems
Cavity Optomechanics

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge in atomic physics, quantum mechanics, and electromagnetism. Having taken Quantum Optics I in the Winter semester is a plus.

Grading

We offer the course as a “Wahlpflichtvorlesung” within the Physics Masters program of LMU. You will be graded through oral or written examinations at the end of the course. Active participation in the tutorials and the Journal club is required to take the final examination.
