Seminar: Optical sensing on the nanoscale – Overview
- Overview
Many physical, chemical, and biological processes are governed by the properties and behavior of the participating materials on the nanometer scale. These nanoscale features are of crucial importance for understanding complex systems in biology, energy conversion, and phase-change materials. However, due to the optical diffraction limit, much of this information is inaccessible to traditional optical sensing and spectroscopy techniques.
Here, we will discuss how this fundamental limitation can be overcome using nanoscale optical sensing techniques, taking examples from the recent literature. Modern micro-/nanoscopy concepts covered will include scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) and super-resolution microscopy as well as new methods based on resonant nanoantennas and metasurfaces.
