Research on Nuclear Fusion as an energy source has progressed steadily over the last decades. With the decision to build ITER in Cadarache, France, the decisive step towards a demonstration of power generation has been taken. The talk will describe our present understanding of fusion physics and technology and outline how research on present day devices, and then on ITER, will finally lead to a demonstration reactor, DEMO.
