Protein traffic in living cells is a logistic challenge. More than 10000 different protein species need to travel between cellular compartments ('organelles') to maintain vital processes in the cell. Lacking a mastermind, protein sorting, targeting, and transport has to rely on physico-chemical self-organization processes. Relying on experimental and theoretical approaches, the talk will highlight some crucial determinants of protein sorting and some generic aspects of the associated protein transport.
