The field of data science is currently booming across different industries. The work of a data scientist usually involves a combination of statistics, computer science, and domain expertise. In this talk I will give an introduction to some relevant concepts, technologies, and machine learning techniques. I will illustrate how they feature in a few exemplary data science case studies. I will also discuss similarities and differences to physics and explain why physicists can become very good data scientists.
