Festkolloquium: From Atom Smashers to X-ray Lasers: Accelerators in this corner of our Universe

For over 100 years scientists have explored ever smaller aspects of the universe through the use of particle beams with ever higher energies. This has led to many generations of 'machines' specialized for these scientific applications. While High Energy Particle Physics has motivated many new innovations, x-ray science has also been a significant beneficiary. In this presentation, we take a tour of the development of the highest energy particles and the brightest light. We explore where we have arrived, how we got here, and the outlook for the future.
