In this talk, an overview of various research projects in emission tomography will be presented, including the construction of a Compton camera for hadrontherapy monitoring and novel concepts for PET imaging, as well as the development of dedicated image reconstruction techniques for both PET and Compton imaging. Special emphasis will be put on the role of accurate models of the underlying physics, i.e., how our knowledge of image formation and degradation phenomena (and our ability to model these phenomena) can be decisive to improve the quality of the reconstructed images.
