At sufficiently high energy density, strongly interacting matter is predicted to become a plasma of deconfined quarks and gluons. I analyze the behavior of heavy quark-antiquark bound states (quarkonia) in such a deconfined medium and show how the results can be used to determine the temperature of the quark-gluon plasma. The analysis is then applied to quarkonium production experiments in high energy heavy ion collisions.
